2008 GEYF Northern Conference Champions
2005 & 2006
Varsity Gladiators win League Championship Back to Back!!!
Varsity Gladiators take League Championship for the second straight year, blitzing past Southwest to a 28-0 victory!!! (See story below)
2006 GLADIATORS TAME MUSTANGS 28-0 TO CLAIM GEYF CROWN
It was billed as the dream match-up. Gladiators vs Southwest. Both teams came into the game 9-0. Both teams had potent offenses and stifling defenses. It was the game that had been anticipated all year. It was the game that the Gladiators needed to win to complete their goal of back to back GEYF Varsity Champions.
It was a cold and dreary night at Garces and in the first half the Gladiator offense matched the weather Like a cold engine they sputtered and never sustained any drives. The defense, however was relentless, quick and hard-hitting all night. Middle linebacker Arnufo Martinez punished any Mustang running back that tried to run between the tackles. Fernando Saucedo and Simon Martinez harassed the taller Southwest receivers not allowing them to make key receptions. Finally, with 9 seconds in the half the Gladiators scored on a 2 yd TD plunge by Alex on a fourth and goal. The point after was blocked and the Gladiators went into halftime leading 6-0, their lowest scoring half of the season.
What ever was said by the coaching staff at halftime woke up the Gladiator offense. On the second offensive play of the second half, Alex Garzon took the ball 55 yds for a TD. Inspired by the offense, the defense turned it on even more, completely shutting out the Mustangs on the pass and the run. The rejuvenated offense lead by Bubba Ceja, Gustavo Gomez and of course #5 "Little Reggie Bush" Alex Garzon found its stride and put together two long, time consuming scoring drives to put the game out of reach. Arnufo Martinez, replacing the departed Hector Gonzales at fullback, showed that he could play on the other side of the ball as well with solid inside running. With 5 minutes to go and the Gladiator fans chanting "back to back". Bubba ended his career with the Gladiator with a 60 yd TD run for the final score of 28-0 to claim their second consecutive Varsity Championship.
The Gladiators finished the season 10-0. The offense scored 438 pts, the defense only gave up 12 pts. This was a team at the beginning of the year had no quarterback, no proven running back and one returning offensive lineman. While the players must be given credit for playing hard all year, a lot of the credit has to be given to the coaching staff. They put in a lot of hours not only during the season but in the off-season to make these players the best that they could be. The Head Coach is Albert Barrera who put in the most hours ensuring that not only the Varsity was ready to play but the equipment for all the teams was second to none and working order. Gilbert Rodriguez was the architect of the best defense in the league and put in many more hours as the Area Representative to the league. Ricky Carter was the offensive coordinator. Coach Carter is a Correctional Officer for the City of Shafter and volunteered to work the night shift so he could coach. His task was even more difficult in that he lives in the Northeast and would drive out to Shafter for practice, then drive home to prepare for work and then make the drive back to Shafter for his shift. Randy Benson was the defensive line coach and the team Paramedic. Coach Benson volunteered his Saturdays at our home games to act as the required Paramedic, saving us the cost of hiring a EMT/Paramedic. Vince Duffy coached the offensive line and Special Teams. Sal Flores coached the defensive backs Coach Flores was another one who made sacrifices juggling his time as Correctional Officer with the City of Shafter and Calif. Dept. of Corrections to coach. A special thanks has to go out to all these men and their wives (who put up with all the hours spent away from the "honey-do list) for the work that they have done with the youth of this community.
